7. March 2025From sign language avatars to AI foresight: Abacus alpha proves its innovative strength
Abacus alpha has been awarded the BSFZ seal (Bescheinigungstelle Forschungszulage), which officially confirms the company’s innovative expertise and commitment to its own and commissioned research and development (R&D) activities. Dr. Heiko Jopp, CTO of Abacus alpha, talks in an interview about the significance of the seal and how it supports the company’s innovation strategy.

Question: Dr. Jopp, Abacus alpha has recently received several BSFZ seals. What does this recognition mean for your company?
Dr. Heiko Jopp: The BSFZ seal is a confirmation of our innovative strength and a recognition that makes us very proud. It demonstrates that our research and development projects are not only forward-looking but also officially acknowledged as eligible for funding. This underlines both our expertise and our contribution to technological progress.
Question: Can you tell us more about the projects that have been recognized with the BSFZ seal?
Dr. Heiko Jopp: Certainly. We have received BSFZ seals for both in-house research and fully outsourced research projects. One highlight in the first category is our project to develop an AI-based foresight process. With this, we aim to identify novel technological developments early on and make our innovation processes even more efficient.
In the area of contract research, we are particularly proud of two additional projects: first, the development of applications based on memristors, which enable innovative maintenance concepts. Second, a project that is especially close to our hearts: the development of an AI-based sign language avatar. With this technology, we aim to break down communication barriers and promote inclusion.
Question: What role does the BSFZ seal play in your strategic orientation?
Dr. Heiko Jopp: The seal helps us build trust with our partners and investors. It is a visible sign that our projects and technologies are not only innovative but also substantial. In an increasingly technology-driven world, having such certifications is crucial to solidify one’s position as a leading innovator. Moreover, the seal signals that we possess strong R&D capabilities internally while also being able to operate effectively within a network.
Question: How will the recognized projects shape the future of Abacus alpha?
Dr. Heiko Jopp: Each of these projects represents a crucial step in our strategic development. The AI-based foresight process will help us identify future trends and technologies early on and support them strategically. Memristors open up entirely new possibilities in intelligent maintenance, which could prove to be a disruptive innovation across various industries. The sign language avatar is not only technologically exciting but also socially significant – it demonstrates how technology can positively impact the lives of many people.
Question: How do you assess the significance of receiving the seal for Abacus alpha and its subsidiaries?
Dr. Heiko Jopp: The funding landscape in Germany offers many opportunities, but they are often only accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). For other company structures, like the Abacus alpha group, this can be a competitive disadvantage. The research allowance law, which underpins the BSFZ seal, provides us with an opportunity to also receive support and showcase our innovative strength.
Question: Finally, what are your next goals?
Dr. Heiko Jopp: We aim to continue focusing on innovation and strengthening our role as an impact investor and partner for medium-sized businesses. New technologies and sustainable solutions remain at the forefront of our efforts. The BSFZ seals motivate us to further expand our R&D activities and realize innovative projects together with partners and clients that make a difference both economically and socially.
